Thirsty Thursday Harry Potter style :)

Today is Harry Potter premier day, folks, so I'm going to write about those drinks that they always talk about in the books...Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice!




Last summer we visited the newly opened Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and you bet your ass that the very first thing we did was try the drinks they created based on the ones mentioned in the books and movies.

Pumpkin Juice - A spiced drink that reminds one of fall, and delicious! Though one is quite enough, thanks.
And BUTTERBEER! Also an amazingly tasty drink, but very sweet and rich.
And even though Universal isn't giving out the recipe that they use in their theme park, you can recreate something akin to what they mix up!

BUTTERBEER

Start to finish: 1 hour (10 minutes active)
Servings: 4
1 cup light or dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons water
6 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon salt 
1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar
3/4 cup heavy cream, divided
1/2 teaspoon rum extract
Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda

-In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.
-Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
-Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.
-In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.
-To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Granted, that's not the awesome frozen version you can get in the parks, but maybe I'll try my hand at remixing this into a frozen drink recipe and share it with y'all ;)
Is anyone else going to see Harry Potter at midnight tonight? Obviously I'm totally stoked about it!

  1. I'm not a fan of cream soda...but I bet my husband would love this! Could you add ice or something to make it "frozen"?

  2. Hey Kasondra! Yes, I'm sure you could blend it with some ice to make it a frozen drink BUT that would kind of "water down" the taste...my guess is you would have to use more of certain ingredients (especially the brown sugar and cream soda) to get it just right...

  11. I hopped over as part of the FTLOB critque! I love your little features like confession monday's & thirsty thursdays. I will totally look forward to those all week! I love the recipes you try too. All look really yummy. This butterbeer recipe sounds soo good. The little checklist page you have with things you want to do is great too!
