Monday Confessions

I confess...that the only thing I really need to confess this week is that I've spent the past several days being reminded that I DO have friends - real friends, GOOD friends - in Florida, and that I can still enjoy myself here :) Pin It

Monday Confessions

I confess...I'm almost relieved that Walking Dead ends this coming Sunday. Monday mornings are just so much less exhausting when it's not on!

I confess...that as interested as I am in the probable mess that Game of Thrones season 5 will be, I do wish that my reprieve from Sunday night shows was longer.

I confess...I'm not quite sure how to handle the next month and a half or so. For so many reasons. Heh.

Ice & Fire Con Needs YOUR Help!

Myself and the other Ice & Fire Con organizers have always gone out of our way to avoid asking for money to support our convention. The problem is, we've also got a very thin budget - we have to, in order to keep ticket prices even remotely affordable.

Because of that, when a situation arises where we need funds, we have to scramble to cover it. Not the best way to run a business, I understand, but then...we aren't a business - we're a community.

Therefore, as it turns out we need to purchase a new PA system in order to have our Saturday night dance party at Ice & Fire Con this year, we're turning to our community and asking for help :) We need to raise $500 between now and April 18th, so we've started an Indiegogo for that very purpose.

Now, we're using Indiegogo Life because it doesn't charge fees, which means we can't SELL perks...but we've set up some fun milestones, and more will probably be on the way. So please check out our Indiegogo page and donate if you can. Every little bit helps, and in fact, if every person holding a convention ticket donated just $5, we would make our goal.

I'm going to go ahead and throw in a quick THANK YOU SO SO MUCH to who have already donated. You know who you are, and I love you all!

Monday Confessions

I confess...I spent four hours at the emergency vet yesterday because Wendy was bitten or stung by something. Thankfully it turned out to be a localized issue and she should be fine, but what a waste of a beautiful afternoon :-/

I confess...hey, at least fewer distractions (mainly, no computer) led to me getting a lot of reading done while I was there!

I confess...I'm still really into Walking Dead lately, but I'm still reminding myself that they'll probably screw it up sooner or later...

Taking it all Back: St. Paddy's Day Dash and Bash

Last year I ran Greenville's St. Paddy's Day Dash & Bash for the first time, but the experience has become a bit...clouded over. So I planned on re-running it on my own, in my own time, and therefore reclaim it for myself.

Unfortunately it was 48 degrees and raining this morning, but I sucked it up and ran the race anyway. (Admittedly, I had a moment where I almost thought, "Why bother? This weather is terrible. Just get back in bed." But the thought passed almost as soon as it crossed my mind, and I drove myself downtown to spend nearly 30 minutes waiting for the race to start (in the cold and rain) and then another 25 minutes and 41 seconds running (in the cold and rain).

I shaved 49 seconds off my previous personal best! Of course at the end I was somewhere between elated and a combination of starving/cold/wet...

It used to be tradition to go to Coffee Underground after my 5k's...but this time I wanted something a little different. Because I hadn't been to Eggs Up Grill yet, I decided to meet my friend Beth there to load up on some post-run carbs :)

Everything was delicious, and once I got home I let myself relax with a cup of coffee and a book by the fireplace. Oh, and a cat, of course, because this IS my house.

And now that I've once again overloaded on carbs (and, go figure, it's far nicer outside than it was this morning) I'm going to put this entry to rest and enjoy some more reading, perhaps a bit of writing, and maybe some TV :) Pin It

Tara's ASOIAF Re-Read: ACOK, Bran V - Tyrion IX

On a personal note, I've put off writing this recap for far too long. I've been super busy, have had several ARCs to read, and to be honest I also gave up the idea of finishing my ASOIAF re-read before Ice & Fire Con this I'm in no hurry.

Anyway, let's jump right in!

As maddening as they are, Jojen's green dreams are one of the best parts of ACOK. Of course Martin is pretty much the master of red herrings and prophecies and whatnot, but I'm of the opinion that he handles all of that with the most grace in ACOK. Perhaps that's part of the reason it's my favorite book in the series (so far)...

That said, the talk of dreams in Bran's chapters does get a bit tiring. Bran is dreaming but doesn't want to talk about it; he doesn't want to be an "evil" beastling/shapechanger. Meanwhile, Jojen insists that they should fear things in dreams - "The past. The future. The truth." It's a lot for a bunch of children to take on, even in ASOIAF. Unless you're a Walder, that is - those boys are screwy.

In other Stark news - and also, speaking of things being a lot for children to take on - Arya definitely should be chastising herself for choosing to send Jaqen after Weese instead of Gregor or Lord Tywin. But then she IS just a child, so we kind of have to give her a pass. (Funny how people will do that for Arya when she makes mistakes, but refuse to do the same for Sansa... ::sigh::)

Side note: I kind of want to use the name "Tuffleberry the brewer" for one of my pets or something in the future.

Meanwhile Catelyn arrives back at Riverrun, but not before accepting Brienne's oath. Probably since my second re-read, I've wondered if certain parts of their "agreement" would come back to haunt Catelyn/Lady Stoneheart - namely that she won't hold Brienne back from Stannis, and that Brienne will "always have a place by [Catelyn's] hearth and meat and mead at [her] table", that Catelyn will ask no service of Brienne that might bring her into dishonor. How does this apply to the current state of things - that being, Lady Stoneheart telling Brienne to go after Jaime Lannister? And will the part about Stannis ever come up again? Inquiring minds want to know!

However, some questions that came from this chapter have essentially already been answered - unless of course you believe that there's a chance Sweetrobin is Littlefinger's son, we now generally know what Hoster Tully was raving about in regards to Lysa. Thanks, GRRM! (Gods, I can't wait for the next book...)

We also saw a bit of Theon again. Note my excitement. (Yes, that's sarcasm.) That said, as much as I find myself rolling my eyes at Theon, when he is thinking about Dagmer Cleftjaw as the man who gave him "more smiles than [his] father and Eddard Stark together. Even Robb..." - well, up until it becomes clear that he means to take Winterfell, I almost feel bad for him. Almost.

Daenerys is still hanging out in Qarth (honestly, Qarth and Xaro annoy me so much, and I can't even pinpoint exactly why) - in fact, she's kind of stuck there - but at least she runs into Quaithe and things get interesting for a moment with this little 'prophecy' of sorts...

"To go north, you must journey south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow."
Here is my diagram of Quaithe's prophecy.

As we know, Dany has already done some of these things (well, going east, anyway), and chances are this actually means that eventually she'll end up in Asshai...she doesn't seem to WANT to go there, but Quaithe insists that she'll find "truth" there. Of course, I have no idea how Martin is going to send Dany to Asshai and get her back to Westeros in time to do her business there in just two books, but I'm trying not to dwell on that too much.

Finally, we come to Tyrion, whom I've left for last because there were two of his POV chapters in this section. News of Renly's death has reached King's Landing, the Small Council moves forward with proposing Joffrey's marriage to Margaery, and lo and behold, Cersei is nice to Tyrion! (But probably only because she's planning something, of course.)

The second Tyrion chapter is a lot more important, though - they send Myrcella off to Dorne, and then, you know, there's a riot. For which everyone blames Tyrion. Even though, much as I'm loathe to admit it, the crappy situation in King's Landing isn't really his fault. In a way, he's even the glue holding the city together, though almost no one knows it.

Back to that riot, though, a whole bunch of people die or go missing, and Sansa's almost one of them. I can't help but think that she was supposed to go "missing" as well, because seriously WHERE is Tyrek?! I bet you he's not dead, and I'm telling you there's at the very least fanfic about that. I've always wondered if the riot was at least somewhat orchestrated, perhaps by I alone in that? Bueller? Bueller?

Anyway, that's about all I have to say! Eventually I'll get around to my next recap...eventually. ;) Pin It

Monday Confessions

I confess...I wanted to blame con crud for being sick right now, but I know that it's actually the ups and downs in the weather and that I'm likely to be sick for weeks on end. Boo.

I confess...I got SO much done the past several days, including things around my house that I'd been putting off for months, yet I still feel like I didn't accomplish enough. I suppose that's the completionist/perfectionist in me...

I confess...I've really enjoyed the past two episodes of The Walking Dead...and I keep having to remind myself that they're bound to screw it up again, eventually...

Monday Confessions

I confess...I've had this draft opened for a while and I can't think of anything to write.

I confess...sometimes my life seems far too surreal.

I confess...yup, still drawing a blank. I blame the fact that I'm insanely overtired.
